The Sagrada Familia, Antonio Gaudi’s most ambitious creation, was begun in the 19th century and is still under construction today. With Gaudi’s tragic death in 1926 and the destruction of original models during the Spanish Civil War, the building languished for decades. No one understood the complex geometry needed to complete the building and only a handful of people cared.
In 1979, 23-year old New Zealand architect Mark Burry was offered the chance to crack the master’s code. Almost three decades on, he and a dedicated team have been immersed in solving the puzzle; their histories intertwined with that of Gaudi’s famous creation.
Produced with the assistance of Film Victoria, Screen Australia, New Zealand on Air, Television New Zealand, in association with YLE Teema.
This is the story of one of the world’s architectural masterpieces, the astonishing technology employed to complete it, and the kiwi-led design team tasked to realize Gaudi’s impossible vision in everyday architectural nuts and bolts. Using Mark Burry’s own archives and 21st-century digital modelling we unlock the secrets of Gaudi’s magnum opus.
