Tanim
2002 / Papua New Guinea
Director James Frankham
Producer Odetta de la Vega

One tribe’s turbulent journey from highland traditions to modern democracy.

TANIM is a unique story about change in the lives of indigenous Papua New Guineans. This one-hour documentary follows Enga’s ruling tribe, the Apulin, as they struggle to find a balance between the secure familiarity of traditional beliefs and an alien electoral system which challenges accepted practices.

Discover age-old systems of compensation, landownership and traditional chiefdom as the Apulin live out the turbulent Ileksen Taim in the remote and beautiful Highlands. Explore tribal concepts of gift and exchange as more than 200 pigs are prepared for the largest Bride Price ceremony ever witnessed and investigate the complex response of the PNG Highlanders to new forms of competition for leadership.

TANIM probes one of mankind’s most ancient forms of social organisation at the flashpoint of social and political transition. This often leads to conflict, sometimes bloodshed, but is part of an essential and difficult journey.

A current affairs feature using the dramatic TANIM footage has been broadcast on SBS Australia’s respected Dateline programme and won Australia’s coveted Walkley Award for excellence in journalism. The one-hour documentary TANIM, which broadcast nationwide in primetime on SBS TV Australia in October 2003, delves deeper into the anthropological aspects of this remarkable story.

Throughout production the team uploaded images and journals to a website building an Internet audience in anticipation of a broadcast documentary. Photographs and articles were supplied to magazines and newspapers worldwide; most notably, Sydney Morning Herald and four publications in TIME Magazine. Both web and print content are available to broadcasters for promotion of the final documentary.
